But then its education minister announced that schools cannot be reopened till the pandemic situation improves significantly as the safety of children is the priority of the state government.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Nothing has been finalised yet and no guidelines have been issued by the School Education Department with regard to seating arrangements, physical distancing and other measures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>The COVID virus can spread fast during the winter, so schools are yet to resume functioning. We will wait for the decision of the chief minister and the education minister on reopening of schools.\u00a0 None of us actually know when the situation will normalise \u2013 although year 9 and 10 students have been allowed to return to school under very controlled conditions to receive support for their<\/em>\u00a0<em>exams next ye<\/em><em>ar.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-405bfc3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"405bfc3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2020 has been very challenging for Calcutta Rescue and its education projects.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/dmg.org.in\/calcuttarescue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-11-04-at-1.24.55-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"414\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 217px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 217\/414;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/dmg.org.in\/calcuttarescue\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-11-04-at-1.24.55-PM.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"414\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Most of our students are first-generation learners and they belong to very marginalized families.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The potential impacts of the Covid crisis on our students are:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">(1) Wider educational disparities and losses in learning<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">(2) Increased dropout rates<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">(3) Students missing their most important meal of the day due to surge in poverty and<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">(4) Greater risks in terms of their wellbeing and safety.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The government schools started running selective classes via mass media like TV and radio during the COVID-19 lockdown period.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It also claims to have started online classes but very few Government school students have been able to access them, although some private schools have run online classes.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cab9092 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cab9092\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f0c1194 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f0c1194\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5004c8c\" data-id=\"5004c8c\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca6522d elementor-blockquote--skin-border elementor-blockquote--button-color-official elementor-widget elementor-widget-blockquote\" data-id=\"ca6522d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"blockquote.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"elementor-blockquote\">\n<p class=\"elementor-blockquote__content\">Here at Calcutta Rescue we initially tried to continue teaching over the phone but didn\u2019t think we could run online lessons as 40% of our students didn\u2019t have a smartphone or internet connection to run WhatsApp. But when we realised that this technology was essential to keep students motivated and engaged with education we advocated for it strongly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-11115cc elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"11115cc\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-9ecd0d4\" data-id=\"9ecd0d4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ba05726 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ba05726\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Our support groups quickly understood the problem and raised the money to buy the necessary smartphones and to fund dataplans for three hundred families.
