After completing their formal education, many leave their villages to seek employment elsewhere. Santu\u2019s father is a farmer working on leased land, earning a meager infrequent income. His mother is a housewife.\u00a0 Santu became\u00a0the family\u2019s key\u00a0breadwinner when he moved to another state for work as a contractual labour, as his father income was volatile.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tragedy struck when Santu suffered a head injury at work, rendering him unconscious. The government hospital was very far, and it was difficult for us to take him there, so we took him to a local doctor,\u201d his father explained.\n<br><br>\nThe local doctor insisted they visit a government hospital in Kolkata. \u201cSo I did,\u201d his father continued. \u201cBut the medicines they gave us were too expensive, and many of them were unavailable. The doctor at the government hospital referred my son to Calcutta Rescue.\u201d<\/div>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-161afa6 paragraphpp elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"161afa6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\u201cSantu had suffered a brain haemorrhage. But we also discovered that he had Wilson\u2019s Disease,\u201d says Dr. Alakananda Ghosh, the head of medical at Calcutta Rescue.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson\u2019s Disease is a genetic disorder in which copper isn\u2019t eliminated properly, accumulating in organs. Symptoms include swelling, fatigue, abdominal pain, and uncontrolled or poorly coordinated movements. While symptoms typically appear in childhood, they can manifest much later in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Santu has been diligently taking his medicines and has responded well to treatment. \u201cMy boy could not sit or walk at one time, but now he can\u00a0 sit, and walk by himself. He still has some tremors in his limbs, but the doctor has assured us that he will improve in a few more years,\u201d his father said with hope, \u201cI will go as far as I can for my son\u2019s health. I will never give up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Santu\u2019s journey from a bedridden state to regaining his mobility is a testament to his and his family\u2019s resilience and the dedicated care provided by Calcutta Rescue.
