An overview

Calcutta Rescue, an Indian NGO is an amalgamation of needed humanitarian services that enables our less-acknowledged counterparts to break free from the shackles of socio-economic hindrances and create dignified living status for themselves.
Headquartered and operational in and around Kolkata, Calcutta Rescue is one of the most credible grassroot NGOs in Kolkata. It was founded by British physician, Dr Jack Preger. He began his work on the pavements of Kolkata 40 years ago and established Calcutta Rescue as a registered Society in 1991. Since then, it has grown to over 200 compassionate employees serving over 50,000 impoverished and destitute people. Calcutta Rescue focuses on the people who are helped by none and to “rescue” them from the consequences of ill-health, illiteracy and poverty through good healthcare, quality education, and income generating skill development.

Vision

Creating opportunities, transforming lives.

Mission

Calcutta Rescue works to significantly enhance the well-being, learning and living standards of the poorest communities in and around Kolkata. It also provides specialist healthcare assistance for impoverished people approaching Calcutta Rescue from other districts where such services are deficient. Calcutta Rescue works in areas of high need where there is inadequate provision by government, non-profit or private organisations. It initiates alliances and works collaboratively with others to ensure delivery of quality services to these communities.

On ground efforts

Although India is progressing towards a promising economy, yet it is still home to a quarter of the world’s poorest people. Narrowing it to Kolkata, reportedly, a third of its residents live in slums. Through our efforts and learnings from the past 40 years as an NGO in Kolkata, we have designed an award-winning, integrated, and cost-effective model to bridge the gap that hinders government services from reaching the very poor section of the society.
We steer our efforts towards three focus areas - healthcare, education, and living standards to enable and empower people whose presence is often oblivious to the world.
